Why Active Play Matters More Than Ever

(And How We Make It Fun)

Play is evolving — just not always in the direction kids need. Screens are louder, sofas are softer, and outdoor play sometimes feels like the thing that gets squeezed in after everything else. But here’s the truth we see every day at Go Ape: kids don’t want less excitement — they want more. More movement. More fresh air. More “I did it!” moments. More of that feeling you only get when your feet leave the ground and the ordinary drops away.

Why Active Play Matters More Than Ever

At Go Ape, we’ve always believed adventure isn’t just something you do — it’s something you feel. And a big chunk of that starts with active play.

For more than 20 years, we’ve watched kids find their bold, adults rediscover their brave, and entire families reconnect by doing what humans do best — climbing stuff, laughing loudly, trying something new, and racing each other to the next zip wire.

Right now, active play matters more than ever. Kids are spending more time indoors, screens are everywhere, and everyday movement has quietly taken a back seat. But the need to explore, challenge ourselves, and feel that spark of “hang on… I can do this” hasn’t gone anywhere.

So here’s why play that moves the body (and fires up the confidence) is more important now than ever — and how we turn it into pure, forget-everything-else fun.

1. Movement Makes Everything Better

When kids are climbing ladders, navigating nets, jumping between platforms, or wobbling their way across a bridge, they’re definitely pretending not to find scary — they’re doing more than burning off energy.

Active play helps to:

  • Improve focus without them noticing
  • Build coordination, balance, and body awareness
  • Grow confidence by doing exciting, slightly-spicy, new things
  • Reduce stress and boost mood
  • Build resilience through trying, slipping, resetting, and smashing it next time

The moment “I can’t” turns into “I can!” We see it constantly. And it’s the best bit of our day.

3. Imagination Could Be Our Most Underrated Obstacle

We’ll be honest — we don’t currently track imagination as a stat, and no one’s filled out a feedback card saying “top marks for plot twists from the children today.”

But… spend five minutes at any of our sites and you’ll see it everywhere. Kids giving obstacles names or inventing challenges mid-course.

We might not measure it, but we do create the perfect setting for it:

  • Space to explore
  • Stuff to climb
  • A forest that feels alive
  • Just enough “what if?” energy

Active play at Go Ape naturally invites kids to build their own stories around the adventure. We don’t force it — we just give them a playground that’s bigger than a playground.

4. A Healthy Dose of “Oooh!” Is Good for Everyone

Modern childhood is more indoor, more digital, more scheduled, more cotton-wooled. But development still needs:

  • Physical challenge
  • Freedom to roam
  • Measured, confidence-building risk
  • Fresh air and open space
  • A buzz of adrenaline that leaves you beaming

Not dangerous. Not reckless. Just enough thrill that you land and think:
“That was amazing. Let’s do it again.”

That feeling? That’s active play doing its best work.

5. How We Make Play Impossible to Resist

We don’t just offer adventure — we build play right into it.

Here’s what we do differently:

We get you outdoors

Because forests make everything better.

We make movement the point

Not the warm-up, not the add-on — the main event.

We give kids (and adults) a real challenge

The kind that earns a story worth telling later.

We make it social

Because adventure is best when it’s shared.

We keep it playful

More smiles, less seriousness, zero faff.

We celebrate the “I did it!” moments

The ones that matter. The ones you remember. The ones you repeat.

The Bottom Line

Active play shouldn’t feel like a lesson, or exercise, or something adults tell kids is “good for them.”

It should feel like:

  • A place to connect and reconnect
  • A moment of bravery that turns into pride
  • A burst of excitement that shakes off the ordinary
  • A shared laugh with your favourite people
  • A memory you want more of

And that’s what we’re here for. Because the best play doesn’t feel like development. It feels like an adventure.

And adventure?
It’s better when you Go Ape.
